The Long Road Down the Illinois River — Day Trip

Origin
Bartonville,
Illinois
Destination
Springfield,
Illinois
Distance
~115 mi
each way
Riders
6 riders
3 bikes

This is not the fast route. It is the right route. From Bartonville, you drop south on IL-29 along the east bank of the Illinois River -- a two-lane that hugs river bluffs, threads through small towns unchanged for decades, and gives you every mile of the valley before you ever get near a highway. Two stops before Springfield, a proper lunch at the end, and a different road home.

Total riding is around 230 miles round trip. With stops and lunch you are back in Bartonville by 5 or 6pm. The plan accounts for six riders on three bikes -- pull-throughs and bar parking everywhere on this route.

Departure  ·  ~8:30 AM
Bartonville -- South on IL-29
Mile 0

Pick up IL-29 south out of Bartonville and let the road unspool. The first twenty miles through Pekin and south are flat and open, with the river on your right whenever the tree line breaks. Traffic is light on a Saturday morning. No reason to rush -- the whole point is the miles.

IL-29 runs the east bank of the Illinois River. It is the correct road for this run. Scenic byway designation, smooth surface, no trucks.

Stop 1  ·  ~9:30 AM
The Duck Blind -- Kingston Mines
First Stop

210 Washington St, Kingston Mines, IL 61539 -- a small river town bar sitting right on the IL-29 corridor, about 30 miles into the run. The Duck Blind is a genuine local watering hole -- not dressed up for tourists, not trying to be anything other than what it is. Pull in, stretch, get a round if the mood is right, take in the town. Kingston Mines is the kind of place that reminds you why you took the long road.

Open from 10:00 AM daily. Perfect first stop timing.

30 miles from Bartonville. Spend 20-30 minutes.

Stop 2  ·  ~10:30 AM
Riverside Bar & Grill -- Havana
Midpoint
Small river town main street with historic storefronts
Havana, IL -- the Illinois River's best midpoint. Historic downtown, river access, no pretense.  ·  Photo: Unsplash

318 W Main St, Havana, IL 62644 -- Havana is the anchor town of the central Illinois River valley, and Riverside Bar & Grill is where locals eat. Open Saturday from 11:00 AM. Known for burgers, steaks, and a straight-ahead bar menu without the markup. Downtown Havana sits three blocks from the river -- worth a short walk while you're there. The historic district is intact and the waterfront is quiet.

45-50 miles from Bartonville. Spend 30-45 minutes -- have something light if you want, save your appetite for Springfield.

Arrival  ·  ~12:00 PM
Springfield -- Lunch
~95 miles out

IL-29 feeds into Springfield from the northwest. Easy navigation into downtown. Three lunch options are laid out in the section below -- Obed & Isaac's is the natural call for a group coming off a long ride, but all three work. Plan for 60-90 minutes in Springfield, then point north for home.

Return  ·  ~1:30-2:00 PM
Home via US-136 & US-24
~115 miles back

Pick up US-136 west from Springfield -- a different road entirely from the outbound run. US-136 runs straight northwest through Mason County farm country, rejoins US-24 near Havana, and takes you north through Pekin and into Bartonville. The return is quicker by design -- you have already done the scenic miles. This is the direct road home with the wind behind you. Back in Bartonville by 5:00-5:30 PM.

US-136 west to Havana, then US-24 north to Bartonville. Roughly 115 miles, 2 to 2.5 hours with a fuel stop if needed.

Sliders are the lifeblood. The honest report on this route: there is no White Castle in Springfield, IL. The location at 1901 N. Bechtle Ave permanently closed after a fire. The closest active castle on the IL-29 / US-136 corridor is back in Bartonville territory -- the nearest confirmed location is across the Indiana line.
