Wednesday morning offers two entirely different experiences. Pick based on your priorities. Both are good. They do not combine well - read the notes for Option A carefully before committing.
Wednesday mornings, 10:00 AM. Arrive by 9:30 AM. Free tickets - collect the evening before (3:00-7:00 PM) from the Prefecture of the Papal Household, right-side colonnade of Piazza San Pietro, OR on the morning from 7:00-8:30 AM.
The Pope tours in the Papamobile before the formal address - roughly 90 minutes total. A genuine spectacle regardless of religious affiliation.
Confirm at vaticantour.com closer to date - audiences are occasionally moved or cancelled.
Important: Do NOT combine with Vatican Museums on the audience morning. The entire Vatican area is overwhelmed. This is morning only; afternoon stays free for the centro storico loop.
Better option if the Papal Audience is not a priority. Tram 8 from Trastevere to Largo di Torre Argentina (10 min), then 5-10 min walk to the Pantheon.
Arrive at the Pantheon at 9:00 AM opening. By 10:30 AM the piazza fills with tour groups. The early window is a different experience entirely.
EUR 5 / USD 5.75 entry. The oculus and dome proportions: 43 meters in diameter, with identical height from floor to dome apex - a perfect sphere would fit inside. Raphael's tomb is inside, right side. Thirty to forty minutes is the right amount of time here.
Five-minute walk from the Pantheon to Piazza Navona. Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers occupies the center. Free to walk through. Beautiful piazza - skip the perimeter restaurants, which are tourist-priced without exception.
Five more minutes south to Campo de' Fiori. Working flower and food market until noon. Worth a stroll - it has a rougher, less curated feel than Navona and is the more honest version of Roman public life. This is a good spot to pick up something to take home.
Twenty-minute walk from Campo de' Fiori. Visit after 4:00 PM when the tour group wave has passed. The scale surprise is the actual experience here - the fountain fills an entire building facade and emerges suddenly from a narrow street. The coin. Then leave.
Spanish Steps or Via Condotti for window shopping if the mood calls for it. Then taxi or bus back to Trastevere to change for dinner.
Roman tradition refined through a modern kitchen: black truffle carbonara, slow-cooked duck ragu, 1,200+ label wine cellar. The outdoor terrace in October is still warm enough for outdoor dining and offers one of the best skyline views in the city. This is the move for the last evening.
Reservations are essential. Do not leave this to chance - book via the website or call +39 06 5815274.
Practical Notes - Day 14
- Papal Audience (if choosing Option A): free tickets, collect the evening before at Vatican right colonnade. Confirm date at vaticantour.com - audiences are occasionally moved or cancelled.
- Trevi Fountain: every restaurant within 200m is tourist-priced. Walk 7-10 min from the monument before sitting down anywhere.
- Antico Arco: book well in advance. This is the farewell dinner - do not leave it to chance.
- Campo de' Fiori morning market has the best produce and flower vendors for any final souvenir shopping.
