San Marco Core

Arrive at San Marco by 9. The Piazza is yours before the crowds find it.

Breakfast
Coffee in Cannaregio

Two strong options before heading south to San Marco. Get to the Piazza by 9 AM sharp - the hour before tour groups arrive is a different city.

First Choice
Fondamenta degli Ormesini 2804. Founded 1939, the last licensed coffee roaster in the historic center. Beans roasted on-site. Tiny, standing-only, completely authentic. Order macchiato or caffe normale + cornetto. No tourists, no theater.
EUR 1.50-3 USD 2-4
Backup / Grab-and-Go
Pasticceria Bar Pitteri
Strada Nova 3843/A - on the main walking spine toward San Marco. Reliable grab-and-go option if time is short.
EUR 2-5 USD 2-6

Vaporetto from Ca' d'Oro to San Marco: Line 1 or 2, approx 15 min - a scenic Grand Canal ride worth taking once.

Morning - 9 AM to 1 PM
San Marco Done Smart

Enter the Basilica at your pre-booked timed entry slot (first available, ideally 9:30 AM). Allow 45-60 min inside. Look up at the interior mosaics - the gold is genuinely overwhelming. Add the Pala d'Oro before leaving.

First Stop
Book at tickets.basilicasanmarco.it. Tickets release 45 days in advance. Queues without reservation: 60-90 min between 10 AM-1 PM. The Loggia dei Cavalli terrace gives the best Piazza view from above - worth 20 min if booked museum ticket includes it.
EUR 3 entry USD 3.45 + EUR 5 / USD 5.75 Pala d'Oro

Walk the Piazza while still morning-quiet. The Caffe Florian spectacle is available if wanted - EUR 9-14 / USD 10-16 with seating surcharge, and yes, that is the real price. Then cross to the Doge's Palace for your pre-booked slot.

Second Stop
Allow 1.5-2 hours minimum. The Sala del Maggior Consiglio with Tintoretto's Paradise is genuinely worth the hyperbole. The Bridge of Sighs is best appreciated from inside, not the bridge over the Rio di Palazzo. Book online at palazzoducale.visitmuve.it. Walk-in from noon onwards. Elevator available for upper floors.
EUR 30 USD 35 St. Mark's Square Museums pass

The museums pass covers Doge's, Correr Museum, Archaeological Museum, and Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana - full value if you have energy for all four.

Afternoon - Two Options
Choose Your Afternoon
Option A - Art

Venice Art Biennale "In Minor Keys" - for strong art interest. The 61st Biennale spans Giardini + Arsenale. Budget 3-4 hours; Arsenale is the priority if time is short. Vaporetto Line 1 toward Lido, get off at Giardini stop. Autumn hours: 10 AM - 6 PM (last entry 5:45 PM). Closed Mondays. Cobblestone passages throughout; most pavilions accessible.

EUR 30 USD 35
Option B - Neighborhood

San Polo + Rialto Wander. After San Marco, cross toward San Polo. Walk the Rialto Bridge (briefly crowded, done quickly). Rialto market stalls on the San Polo side are atmospheric even by afternoon when the fish market has wound down. Campo San Polo is the largest campo after Piazza San Marco - quiet, local, good for sitting. Wander back toward Cannaregio via Ruga degli Spezieri and Strada Nova.

EUR 40-55 pp with wine USD 46-63
