Galena has the peculiar quality of making you regret not coming sooner. Tucked into the bluffs above the Fever River in far northwest Illinois, its gas-lit Main Street and 19th-century brick storefronts look exactly the way a fall weekend should feel -- unhurried, warm, and slightly amber around the edges. For Alex and Sam, this is two nights of fall color at altitude, long dinners, and one very good reason to set the alarm.
Getting There
Route: I-88 W to Dixon / Rock Falls area, then US-20 W into Galena.
Outbound stop: Buc-ee's, Plano (I-88 at Route 34) -- fuel, coffee, road snacks before the scenic stretch.
The last 30 miles of US-20 W through Jo Daviess County hill country are worth taking slowly. Pull over on the ridge above town before descending.
Three Days in Galena
Depart Naperville by 10 AM. The westward run transitions from flat suburban corridor to rolling hill country around Savanna -- that final stretch of US-20 dropping into Galena earns the drive out. Coffee stop at Buc-ee's in Plano (I-88 at Route 34).
Check in, drop bags, and get on foot. Roughly half a mile of 19th-century commercial blocks. Pick up a bottle at Galena Cellars (111 N Main St) -- three floors of seating, local pours, seasonal small plates.
Friday night belongs to Fried Green Tomatoes (213 N Main St) -- steaks, Italian-accented seafood, a serious wine list. Reservations not optional; book 2-4 weeks ahead.
Set the alarm. Horseshoe Mound Preserve opens at 6 AM for the sunrise view. Then: Galena On The Fly balloon at Eagle Ridge Resort -- one hour, up to 3,000 feet over Jo Daviess County, champagne toast. $260/person. Book 4-6 weeks ahead.
Post-balloon brunch, then a walking history loop: Ulysses S. Grant Home (500 Bouthillier St, free tours) and the Dowling House (220 Diagonal St, Galena's oldest structure, 1826). Finish with wine on Main Street.
Log Cabin Steakhouse (201 N Main St) -- operating since 1937, with the wine list to show for it. Hand-cut Angus aged beef, Greek specialties, 100+ selections. Book with Friday's reservation.
Breakfast at Otto's Place (100 Bouthillier St) -- scratch-made, locally sourced; thick French toast, egg sandwiches. Then walk a section of the Galena River Trail -- 8 miles along the old Burlington Railroad grade through restored bottomland forest. You don't need to walk far.
A last loop through Main Street for lingering purchases, then wheels up by noon or 1 PM. US-20 E back to I-88 E; the drive home through bluff country is nearly as good as the drive in. Target arrival back in Naperville by 4 PM.
